Just for fun: Eavesdropping on the kids
I recently got to spend the day with my niece and nephew, along with all of my minions, of course. Now that the kids are a little older, I am endlessly entertained listening to their conversations amongst themselves. It’s amazing what they come up with to talk about, and how they’re so accepting of what each of them has to say. The older kids don’t blink an eye when the younger ones say something a little off the wall. They totally go with it. It’s so sweet…and hilarious.
Xander (8): What do you want to be when you grow up?
Sydney (7): I want to be a scientist.
Xander: When you say it, you have to stand on the chair and announce it.
Sydney: I want to be a scientist that studies dinosaurs! A paleontologist!
Xander: I want to be a scientist, too.
Layla (9): You forgot to stand on the chair. What kind of scientist?
Xander: One that invents stuff! What do you want to be, Layla?
Layla: I want to be a teacher! Maybe first grade or kindergarten.
Kaylan (6): Oh yeah, teach first grade. First grade will be the best!
Xander: What will you be, Kaylan?
Kaylan: I want to kill demons!
Xander: You’re going to need a sword for that.
Kaylan: I’m thinking more of a long knife.
Xander: Yeah, that would be good. Gwen, what about you?
Gwendolyn (4): I want to be GWEN! CAPTAIN OF THE MAGICAL UNICORNS!
Sydney: That sounds good.
Me: Let me get this straight. When you all grow up we’re going to have a teacher, an inventor, a paleontologist, a demon hunter and a Captain of the Magical Unicorns?
All: Yes!
Me: Awesome. I’m completely behind all of these career paths.
Surely I’m not the only one who likes to listen to these little conversations. Please tell me other people hear the same thing around their lunch tables…Anyone?
